Connecticut Jazz Studio

Founded in 2012, the Connecticut Jazz Studio (CJS) was created to serve Fairfield County with high quality Jazz education and performances. Director David DeJesus, a Grammy-award winning multi-instrumentalist, is passionate about sharing his love for Jazz with aspiring young students and resident fans of music. With programs ranging from private lessons in woodwind and brass performance to improvisation and composition workshops to educational performances and concerts featuring world-class musicians, CJS strives to spread the joy of Jazz and create a community of students and jazz fans from all over Fairfield County.

Private Lessons

Jazz is a passed down art form where master players take on proteges and mentor them in the art of improvisation and composition. David DeJesus and the CJS continues that tradition with highly structured weekly private lessons that are custom tailored to each individual student. Past students have gone on to All-State festivals in New York and Connecticut as well as acceptance into major conservatories including Julliard, Manhattan School of Music, The New School, New York University, Oberlin, and Purchase College.

Areas of study include –

  • Saxophone, Flute, and Clarinet Technique
  • Jazz Improvisation and Theory for all instruments
  • Jazz Composition
  • Latin Percussion technique

Workshops

Learning Jazz as a group is a fundamental part of this music. Jazz needs to be played with people and learning how to make music together is an important part of the craft. Drawing students from all over Fairfield County, CJS is proud to have workshops that bring these talented students together to form lasting friendships while creating great music.

CJS offers workshops in –

  • Jazz improvisation
  • Harmony and theory
  • Big band techniques and traditions
  • Small combo performance techniques

Live Jazz

Exposing the public to high quality Jazz is one of the main missions of the Connecticut Jazz Studio. Whether sponsoring trips into New York City to world-class Jazz clubs or presenting concerts in Fairfield County featuring New York City musicians, CJS aims to provide opportunities for students to hear high quality Jazz and meet world-renown musicians.

w/ Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra

    8:00pm

    The Apollo Theater

    New York, NY

The spirit will move you, literally, in this exploration of the deep connection between jazz and spiritual traditions. This concert features two works from Grammy Award-winning composer Arturo O’Farrill and featuring the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.  A Still Small Voice is a hybrid of classical jazz and Afro Latin elements, focused on the idea of a conscience, a voice inside of us that knows right from wrong. The Apollo Theater is pleased to be commissioning a new work to be penned by O’Farrill, entitled The Cornel West Concerto which will set  text by the virtuosic speaker, scholar and activist, Dr. Cornell West to Afro Latin Jazz orchestration.  Steeped deeply in the faith and in the oratory of great preachers, Dr. West’s clarion call for social justice rings loud and clear in  the style and improvisatory genius of a great jazz musician.Screen Shot 2016-01-14 at 9.55.11 AM
